April 9: Fire Mitigation in Larimer County

Let’s get fired up about preventing wildfires!

Raina Eshleman, Wildfire Partner Program Coordinator for the Larimer Co Sheriff’s Office

Sgt Derek Rosenquist, Larimer Co Sheriff’s Office Emergency Service’s Unit

Raina and Derek will give you a detailed look at everything involved in mitigation currently planned in our county.  This is our opportunity to learn what steps we need to take to help the Emergency Services Unit of Larimer County prevent wildfires in our mountain paradise and to learn about the “Ambassador Program of the Glacier View Fire Protection District”. 

The upcoming Air Curtain Burner event, scheduled for April 26 and 27, will also be presented, with details forthcoming for the where and the when.

May 14: Wildflowers!

Wildflowers are popping up all over!!

Margie Caswell Former teacher, Poudre Valley School District, President of Poudre Education Association.

Margie is a wildflower enthusiast who often leads plant identification walks and gives programs for the Poudre Wilderness Volunteer Training, and leads several Red Feather Lakes tours.  She will share with us a PowerPoint presentation on wildflowers in our area.

June 11: Weed and Cheatgrass Identification and Management.

Casey Cisneros. Larimer County Weed District

Casey brings brochures to help identify the weeds in our neighborhoods, and will take us on a walk outside to identify those pesky weeds. Feel free to bring samples of your own weeds for him to identify!

He’ll bring copies of the Weed Management Reference Guide, for sale for $16.50.

Ted Sammond, Weed Management Coordinator, GVM Ecology Team.

Ted will introduce the GVM Weed Warrior Program, enlisting the support and participation of friends and neighbors who live in our area in controlling noxious weeds found throughout GVM. These efforts are designed to control invasive plants while encouraging the establishment and vigor of native plants.

Saturday, June 15: Weed Management Field Day 10:00 am to Noon.

Ted Sammond, Weed Management Coordinator, GVM Ecology Team

Ted will meet us at the Pavilion at Gate 8, showing how to identify the prominent weed species found in Glacier View Meadows. He will explain control options for each stage of plant development from seedling to mature plant. In addition, he will cover which weeds can be controlled with mechanical methods and which weeds are best controlled using sprayers. 

He’ll also explain the Ecology Team program which offers the free use of backpack sprayers to Glacier View Meadows residents and makes herbicide available to control selected weeds within our community. 

July 9: Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Brock McArdle. Colorado Parks and Wildlife

Brock will present a program on the mission of the CPW and briefly discuss the projects CPW supports, such as, conservation, parks, trails, education, and wildlife management. 

He’ll be bringing his canine ranger (Cash) and introduce his role as Brock’s partner. If you have never met Cash, this is a great opportunity. 

Your children will probably enjoy meeting Brock and Cash as well!

August 13: Solar in the Mountains

Justin Wojtarowicz, Sandbox Solar

Justin will present a general overview on how solar works and go into the pros and cons of solar in our mountain communities.  His presentation will go into the details of putting solar on your home, battery backups, net metering credits and billing, etc.

September 10: Culturally Modified Trees

What on earth is a “culturally modified tree” you ask?

Max Engelhardt, Anthropology studies at University of Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona University.

He will be explaining to us what a culturally modified tree (CMT) is. These can be found all over the USA, and have large concentrations in Larimer County and the Pikes Peak area.

October 10: Bird Conservancy of the Rockies

The Bird Conservancy’s mission is the conservation of birds and their habitats through an integrated approach of science, education and land stewardship. They envision a future where birds are forever abundant, contributing to healthy landscapes and inspiring human curiosity and love of nature.

Programs this year have been coordinated by Terry and Susie Campbell working with Beth and Jim Lyne, all members of the Ecology Team at Glacier View Meadows.
