Haystack Tour with Tim and Phil

On 6/20/09 Jim, Wynne and Ellen accompanied Tim D’Amato (Larimer County Land Steward Manager) and Dr. Phil Westra (CSU, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management) to the Haystack Weed Demonstration area. Read previous blog post for more details. The Canada thistle (CT) plants were very small due to our cool spring. But CT seemed to be visible only in the unsprayed areas so Tim and Phil were pleased with the early results. A return site visit is planned for August 12 to allow the CT to grow larger.

2009 Ecology Fair

Displays will feature Mountain Gardening, Colorado Wildflowers, Living Green, Noxious Weeds (with guests Tim D’Amato, Larimer County and Dr. Phil Westra, CSU), GVM Plants, Forest Management (including the latest information on Mountain Pine Beetle from US Forest Service), Land Stewardship, and Living with Bears (featuring author and speaker Linda Masterson,  Jim and Jane Tiffin from the Crystal Lakes Bear Aware program, and Shane Craig, CO Division of Wildlife). Live plant displays, posters, and handouts will be available.

Crellin Lake: Just add water!

Exciting update from Jeff:”I thought that maybe others in the community would enjoy taking a peek at the progress we have made at Crellin Lake. This beatiful spring of 2009 is really contributing to our success of rebeautifying the neighborhood. The constant trickle of runoff and natural spring waters has created a reality where once only a picture in are minds existed.

Crellin Lake is nearing capacity. We are seeing a rise in water level of about 2″/day. That, coupled with the growth and maturity of some natural and hand-sown grasses, has made for a most picturesque setting and community recreation spot.

I took a relaxing stroll around the lake this morning, June 9th, and snapped a few pictures of Crellin Lake and the immediate surroundings. Hope you enjoy the view as much as I did. Regards, Jeff Gibford

Update from Paul at Utah Field Site

At our last Ecology meeting Paul Block said that he would be on assignment for most of June with CSU’s CEMML Program (Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands). He sent this update yesterday, 6/6/09. “Here are a few pics from SW Utah at the Desert Experimental Range. The digs are good on site, but the environment can be extreme. The bandannas protect from sun, wind, dust and the dry air.
